The Somerset Field Hockey team had a good seasons. They finished with 6 wins, 7 losses, and 5 ties. Captains: Sue Bernardo, Wendy Affonso, and Rachel Frizado led the team to many victories including two exciting wins over Case and Durfee. Much thanks should be given to head coach, Sue Curt Ramos and Pam Bustin, former Olympian, who worked to mold talent and develop incredible teamwork. New, talented players, who contributed to the team this year will pave the way toward future victories. Cross Country The 1989 season marked Coach Bernardo's 25th season coaching Cross Country and it is safe to say that he is very pleased with his team’s performance. Fine leadership by the captains, Kyle, Michelle, and John, helped the Raider Cross- Country team to finish the year with a winning record, their finest performance in over five years. The girls performed well all season led by senior Michelle Belanger and sophomore Sarah Johnson, Surprise perfor¬ mances by freshmen newcomers Michelle and Danielle Souza helped round out the team and give hope for more successful seasons in the years to come. The girls capped off their season by placing 5th overall and 2nd in Division II at the SMC Conference Meet. The boys on the other hand had some rather disappointing moments. A one point loss to Dartmouth and a three point loss to Durfee caused the squad to question their abilities but also made them deter¬ mined to get revenge. The revenge came on October 27 when a confident Raider team, led by John Davis, placed 5th overall and 2nd among Division II teams in the SMC Conference Championships at SMLI, leaving Durfee and Dartmouth literally in the dust. This was the climax of the season, letting the team and Coach Bernardo know that their hard work did not go to waste. Finally, the team would like to thank Coach B for his hard work and for bringing out the best in all of us. We wish you the best of luck in many more fulfilling years to come. Thanks B! Soccer 1989 was one of the most difficult soccer season Somerset ever encountered. The team participated in a very competitive Division I league. We played against schools such as Durfee, Barnstable, and Falmouth. We were able to remain disciplined throughout the season, despite our inexperience and small size. Coach Horton, along with tri- captains Keith Rosa, Mike Turner, and Bryce Sulli¬ van, should be commended for the hours of hard work spent with the team. Even with a record of 0 - 17 - 1, it was a good season for the team because great improvements were made in all aspects of the game. Mention should be made that Bill King was one of twenty players chosen from the Division I league for the All-Star team. Special thanks are extended to Coach Horton for his pa¬ tience, guidance, and most of all his devo¬ tion to the team and the sport. Keith Rosa 66 ■MiM . Volleyball We faced a challenge at the beginning of the 1989 volleyball season. We had one returning full-time player and everyone else had very little varsity experience. We would like to thank the following seniors for helping us to lead the team: Jenn Medeiros, Lisa Kenepp, Missi Mc¬ Hugh, Steph Benetti, and Debi Medeiros. With the support and hard work of the six under¬ classmen, we were fairly competitive in our league. The season was trying at times, and a special thanks goes to our dedicated coach, Mr. Porada. The team finished third in the league and nine -and -nine overall. Although we had difficulty with our season, we were able to pave the way for next year’s team. Football Under the superb leadership of captains Lou Faria and Peter Simmons and the rest of the seniors; the 1989 Blue Raider Varsity Football team had some impressive accomplishments. The team thoroughly defeated Barnstable and crushed rival Durfee (28-0). Somerset lost a few close games to the hands of Coyle, Dartmouth, and Case. They also tied Attleboro. Un¬ doubtedly, the high point of the season was a stunning upset of powerful Stang. 71 Cheering back to front, left to right: Brooke Mello, Sally Evans, Becky Chabot, Michelle Parent, Lynn Miranda, Sue Pre- vost, Jill Cordeiro, Jill Murphy, Lee Sherry, Eva Smith, Jen Calio, Mia DeMarco, Nicki Fastino. The 1989 Somerset High Football Cheerleaders were cap¬ tained by juniors, Sally Evans and Becky Chabot, and coached by Cheryl Bigos. They began practicing in July two days every week for two hours at a time. At the end of July they attended the Universal Cheerleaders Associa¬ tion Summer Camp held at the University of Rhode Island. Here the cheerleaders competed against eighteen other cheerleading squads from the area. Due to their excellence, the squad received two red excellent ribbons and two blue superior ribbons. None of the 1989 football cheerleaders will forget receiving the Master Key to Spirit Award given to the squad exemplifying the most spirit. This spirit carried throughout the football season as they supported the team and became an integral part of the total team effort. B.M. 7?
