DAVEY, PAXMAN & Co.,
ENGINEERS, COLCHESTER, ENGLAND,
SOLE LICENSEES AND MANUFACTURERS FOR ENGLAND AND THE COLONIES OF
CENTRIFUGAL ROLLER QUARTZ MILL,
FOR
FINE PULVERIZING IN CONCENTRATION.
ITS PARTICULAR MERITS ARE — Economy in expense of plant. Economy in cost of working. Economy in saving1 gold. Economy in transportation of machinery. Economy in cost of erection of mill at mine* Economy in time required to establish plant at mine (one day only being
consumed). Economy in management of machinery (its simplicity of construction obviates
the need of mechanical skill). Economy in power required (a saving of 50 per cent, being rendered).
We claim especial merit in that feature of this system by which we prevent all flowing of gold and quicksilver •, and the consequent loss of gold that attends stamp milling.

MR. COULTAS DODSWORTH, Mining Engineer, of Haydon Bridge, writes on the isth January, 1874:—"! have just returned from the Stonecroft and Greyside Mines> where I have ^een your ' Patent Ore Dressing Machinery'
to procure — a mere fraction of the hands being only required as against the old system, and the work altogether much better done, and a great saving of Ore effected. I have heard it said that your Machinery is better adapted for poor than for rich Ores, but from what I have seen to-day I am quite confident it will do for any kind of Ores. I beg not only to congratulate, but also to compliment you on the great success of your ' Patent Ore Dressing Machinery.' You may use this letter as you think proper."
TESTIMONIAL.

" Mr. George Green, of Aberystwyth, has supplied a large quantity of Complete Stamping and Amalgamating Machinery to me for Gold Mines in the United States of Colombia, now Republic of Colombia, and it has all proved of excellent description and very good workmanship.

"Names of Mines using the Machinery: — Organos Gold Quartz Mines; Silencio Gold Quartz Mines; Socorro Gold Quartz Mines ; Colombian Hydraulic Gold Placier Mines ; Orita Hydraulic Gold Placier Mines. Also Com- plete Crushing and Concentrating Machinery for Silver and other Ores in several Mines in which I am largely interested."
TREATMENT OF SILVER, LEAD BLENDE, AND OTHER ORES.
Copy of a Letter from the Sentein Mining Company, South France.
"Metropolitan Buildings, 63, Queen Victoria Street, London, E.G.,
"asth May, 1881. "DEAR SIR,
" In reply to yours asking for a testimonial as to the efficiency of your Patent Dressing Machinery as supplied to the Sentein Mines, I would in the first instance state that before your Machinery was erected, we had some doubt of being able to dress our Ores at all, owing to the very close combination of the Lead and Zinc, of which a very large proportion of the produce of our Mine is composed.
" I am, however^ much pleased to say that after ample trial, your Machinery has completely removed the difficulty, and we are now dressing all our Ores to our entire satisfaction, and what you undertook to do has been fully realized ; the labour cost has been greatly reduced, and all the Ores previously put aside as unworkable, have been cleared off, and a large percentage that was going to waste is saved.
"Yours truly,
"WILLIAM STANDING,

PREFACE.
THE want of a Telegraphic Code for Mining purposes has been for some time felt by the Author in his profes- sional practice ; he also has reason to believe that it is a requirement universally admitted by persons interested in Mines Abroad and in the Colonies, by Mining Companies, and by inspecting Engineers. Not only is such a Code needed in order to reduce the expense of telegraphic communication within reasonable limits, but also to secure secrecy, where desired, for the messages transmitted.
Although other Codecs already exist, and notably the well-known ABC Electric Telegraphic Code, their scope
too general to render them of much value for this
is
particular purpose, especially as Mining involves the use of a very large number of technical expressions, which none of the books referred to contain.
The Author has therefore been induced to compile the present work, with the object of supplying this want to some extent.
The arrangement adopted is Alphabetical, that being undoubtedly the simplest and quickest for reference.
The First Part of the Code includes all such sentences as his experience has shown are likely to be required in connection with Mining.
IV PREFACE.
In the Second Part, in which are coded Money Tables, Numbers, Names of Banks, and of Mines and Mining Companies, distinct classes of Code-words have been employed to denote the different coinages, etc., so that they can be immediately recognized, and no time need be lost in searching for them in the body of the volume. Thus :
The Code- Words used are For names of
ENGLISH MONEY ... ... ... Fruits, Flowers, and Plants.
FRENCH MONEY ... ... ... Birds.
AMERICAN MONEY ... ... Animals (other than Birds,
Insects, and Fishes). NUMBERS ... ... ... Proper Names (Latin, Hebrew,
etc.) NAMES OF BANKS ... ... Insects.
NAMES OF MINES AND MINING COM- PANIES .'.. ... ... Fishes.
In the Third Part, five hundred blank Code-words are given, as users of the Code may desire to insert special sentences relating to their own affairs. These words all begin with G, and are in alphabetical order from GLOBATED.
Absolute secrecy can be secured for any message, if by previous arrangement between the sender and the recipient, the Code-words are not used to express the sentences set opposite to them in the book, but others an agreed number of sentences above or below them.
Example. — Supposing Sender arranges with Recipient that the Code- words transmitted shall express the sentences five above them in nume- rical order, then the word "ADORING" (see p. 8) will not mean " owing to the action of" but " not acting in good faith"
Although, as has been stated, the Work is specially designed for persons connected with Mining undertakings, it necessarily contains a great many sentences of general application, and may therefore be found of value in connection with other businesses.
It frequently happens that messages are mutilated and
PREFACE.
rendered meaningless, owing to the letters of the Alphabet being represented by "dots "and "dashes," and confusion caused in consequence during transmission. A reference to the " Morse Alphabet " may sometimes enable the recipient of a message to see where the mistake has arisen, and to extract the correct meaning. This Alphabet is therefore prefixed to the Code.
The Author desires to add, in conclusion, that although he has done his best to make this first edition as complete as possible, the subject dealt with is too vast for him to think that it can be regarded as perfect. He ventures to hope, however, that it will form the foundation of a thoroughly complete and practical Code.
He will be greatly indebted to the Engineers and Managers of Mining Companies if they will kindly assist him in effecting the object he has in view, by pointing out any omissions, or making any suggestions that may occur to them.
